O.P.S. Other People's Stuff!

INTRODUCTION

            One of the strangest things I ever excavated was from a sweet little old lady’s house in a second floor bedroom in Ridley Park.  It was a thirty year old ham.  Not in a can mind you, but in a box.  Wrapped in its original packaging, muslin I believe, it crunched ever so slightly when poked.  It took me quite by surprise as I had been diligently working in Ellen’s home for about three weeks and had finally arrived in a bedroom long ago filled to the brim with dozens of outdated clothes from the seventies, more than two dozen boxes of liquor, a sewing machine and cash, more cash.  In a way, it wouldn’t have surprised me to find a dead body, long ago forgotten, tucked safely under the bed.

            To date Ellen’s home has been one of the most memorable.  Since then my crew and I have orchestrated hundreds of transitions on behalf of our clients.  When I refer to “transitions” I mean we usher people through the process of de-cluttering, downsizing, relocating and re-directing their unwanted, used and sometimes abused personal property to be auctioned, donated to someone in need, and in some cases taken to the dump. 

            From valuable antiques to dollar store bargains, our clients have collected it all.  Every home is different, yet eerily similar in ways, and everyone definitively has a fetish of some kind.  My journey over the years has led me to some personal and professional revelations I believe are worthy of sharing. 

            This book has been written with consideration for the worst offenders of organizational disasters, to well-meaning minimalists with a near hatred of excess.  I love my clients – nearly all of them.  In fact I contend that we have the nicest clients of all.  They’re often lovely men and women ranging from their early sixties to, well, the grave.  However, in the majority of cases they fall in to the growing class of Baby Boomers and their parents.

            My plan is to take you, the reader, on a trip with me through my workings with some very special people.  Some of the names have been changed to protect the innocent as well as the guilty.  I pride myself on confidentiality, so I won’t disclose their actual names, unless of course they’ve agreed to have their stories known to the world.
